Driving the new Explorer on various surfaces is possible, and you can customize your time behind the wheel via the Drive Mode Selector. Numerous drive settings are available. Sport mode increases throttle response, and eco mode conserves fuel. There are also modes for slippery, tow, and snow. Queens, NY, buyers can opt for rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Multiple powertrains are available, and your trim choice determines the engine type.
The Explorer ST, King Ranch, and Platinum trims are equipped with an EcoBoost engine. This 3.0-liter engine cranks out 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. Auto Start/Stop technology conserves fuel when you come to a complete stop. Turbo charging is also included for on-demand power. There's a 2.3-liter I-4 engine that produces 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. This turbocharged powertrain is paired with the Base, XLT, ST-Line, and Timberline trim.
The hybrid powertrain is very efficient as it produces 318 horsepower and 322 pound-feet of torque. A maximum of 5,000 pounds is towable when buyers opt for the Class IV Trailer Tow Package. Regenerative braking is also part of this hybrid package. At least 90% of the kinetic energy is regained while braking, which helps keep the battery charged. Paddle shifters are onboard, as well as 10-speed automatic transmissions.
